Red ant

I found this fairly large (6mm) Myrmica rubra ant last week on a Silver Birch. These are an agressive species of ant and have a nasty sting.

    Beautiful shot! (I have a googlealert for "myrmica rubra," because I'm concerned with them as an invasive species and pest in New England.)
